Hearthfire is the second offering of downloadable content (or DLC) for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, initially introduced September 4, 2012. It allows a player to build her or his own home, to varying sizes and tastes, with the whole plethora of available features as seen in larger homes in the walled cities. It also features the ability to build a family through arranging for the adoption of the children in Waisenhaus Ehrenhall by speaking with Constance Michel or some of the new homeless orphans.

Bards, carriage drivers and Huscarl may all be hired through the hold steward of any of the three possible new homes. Keep in mind that it is also possible for the player to bring an existing Huscarl from one of his or her existing city residences as a companion; whereupon entering the house and again encountering the player, they will ask if they might receive the opportunity to be the Huscarl of the manor.

Some new homeless orphans have also been introduced and can be adopted:
- Alesan, a boy who works as a food runner for the miners in Dämmerstern.
- Blaise, a boy who helps around the stables at Katlas Hof near Einsamkeit.
- Lucia, a girl who begs for gold in the streets of Weißlauf.
- Sofie, a girl wandering around the streets of Windhelm selling flowers.
